TAMPA BAY AREA

About 1,800 to 2,000 people are expected to attend Diwali 2017 organized by Telugu Association of Florida, Tampa Bay (TAF) on Saturday, Nov 11, at Florida State Fairgrounds Special Events Hall, 4800 U.S. 301, according to its President Bhanu Dhulipalla. TAF, Tampa Bay was the first Telugu organization formed in Florida in 1997. Its goal is to promote the Telugu culture, traditions, and language to pass onto future generations. This year, TAF completed 20 years in Tampa. Presented by Asian Cultural Association, “CrossCurrents” takes the stage on Nov. 4, 2017, in Orlando. Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain’s “CrossCurrents” addresses the intersection of jazz and Indian music in this unique fusion performance. The acknowledged master of Indian tabla has joined forces with the renowned jazz bassist, composer and arranger Dave Holland (who got his start with the legendary Miles Davis Bitches Brew group) to form an ensemble that pays tribute to the nexus of two improvisational music forms from opposite sides of the globe.
This outstanding band features not only Hussain and Holland but the renowned New York jazz saxophonist Chris Potter and the outstanding Bollywood composer/vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, legendary Indian jazz pianist Louiz Banks, his brother Gino on drums, and Sanjay Divecha on guitar.

North South holding National Finals Aug. 20-21 in Tampa

For the first time, North South Foundation (www.northsouth.org) is holding its National Finals in Tampa. The contests will be Aug. 20-21 at the University of South Florida. Held in the United States since 1993, the contests are designed to encourage excellence among Indian American children and prepare them to enter better colleges.

Spelling, essay, math, vocabulary, geography, science and public speaking contests are offered. The contests are grouped into Junior, Intermediate or Senior levels for children from first- through 12th-grade. Conducted every year in two steps, children participate in regional contests at various locations throughout the country. Then students with high scores, based on a cut-off, advance to the National Finals. About 1,800 students and nearly 1,500 parents from all over the United States and delegates from NSF Nationals team will be attending the Tampa event.
